Basil Infused OilWhen it comes to infusing oil there are a few basics. Whether you're using basil or pretty much any herb to infuse with the oil, the process is largely the same. There are a variety of different methods to infusing oil with basil. Probably the easiest and most traditional method simply entails putting the oil in any kind of container, probably most easily in a clear bottle along with the basil herbs. From here the container should be kept in a room temperature environment for any period of time whether it be a few hours to a few weeks. The container can even be left out in the sun, as this accelerates the infusion process.
There are also additional methods for making infused oil such as hot and cold infusion. Cold infusion, sometimes known as the blender method, is particularly good for basil and other herbs because ingredients such as these add moisture to the oil which increases the likelihood that it will spoil. When combining the basil and oil in a blender, the oils of the basil can easily be released and mixed and the newly infused oil is ready to be refrigerated. Conversely, hot infusion entails heating the oil and ingredients together. This process is beneficial because it ensures that the oil will be less susceptible to spoilage. Many people prefer the result achieved from this method and believe it produces a more complex taste. Montecastelli or any thicker olive oil is recommended to be used in the infusion process as it keeps a thicker consistency which helps to absorb the herbs such as basil more so and brings out a more complete taste. Thinner olive oils cannot keep the same consistency and oftentimes are more difficult to manage in the maintenance of the cooking. For example, when heating or employing hot infusion to create the basil infused oil an abundance of herbs will get left over when using a thinner oil which altogether leaves a commonly more bitter taste which many claim to be overwhelming which is not the goal when trying to create a complex taste produced from a thicker oil. The basil infused oil can be used in marinades, vinaigrettes which can be enjoyed on a variety of other foods such as meats in addition to the salads. Whatever the purpose of the infused oil, it should be enjoyed soon after preparation as it often tends to spoil easily unless it is preserved like those of the oils which you would purchase at the store.
